The heads of top British company universities have vowed to thwart authorities programs to axe the MBA apprenticeship by splitting the study into two, with the the greater part still currently being coated by the training programme.
Apprenticeships for senior executives have mushroomed next authorities reforms to techniques funding that pressured businesses with yearly payrolls higher than £3m to set apart an equivalent to .five per cent of this sum for spending on workplace training techniques.
Unhappiness that levy resources were currently being expended in this way, on programmes costing up to £18,000, prompted training secretary Gavin Williamson to seek out a evaluate into the MBA apprenticeship with an eye to eliminating it from the levy program.
The Office for Schooling has not however formally scrapped the MBA apprenticeship. But in the hottest list of apprenticeship benchmarks issued by the administering agency, the requirement to get hold of an MBA or other masters degree to full a senior leader qualification has been lower.
Even so, David Oglethorpe, dean of Cranfield university’s university of management, explained to the Financial Moments that his establishment would continue on to provide an MBA what ever the outcome of the evaluate.
Beneath Mr Oglethorpe’s proposal, students would full a senior leader apprenticeship and then undertake an extra piece of coursework and pay out an extra payment to get hold of an MBA. Some students may well have to pay out this cost, which could be up to £9,000, them selves but it would still only be a portion of the total payment.
“I have been battling tooth and nail to say depart it as it is, but this indicates we could still provide the qualification,” Mr Oglethorpe said.
“The responses we get from businesses is that it can help them entice and retain vital personnel. A fifth of our ingestion occur from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds and 15 per cent experienced by no means been to college right before commencing the programme.”
“The senior leader apprenticeship normal has been mapped on to an MBA curriculum, producing it quick for us to provide an MBA for those people that would like one,” Mr Oglethorpe said. “We would have to demarcate the two qualifications but that is fairly very simple to do.”
This way of funding an MBA has strengths, Mr Oglethorpe extra. “Whilst the qualification remains element of an apprenticeship normal, you are not able to ask staff members to add to the charge. If you could, it would signify they would have skin in the match.”
Other company university heads said they were thinking about identical preparations if the authorities decided to clear away the MBA from apprenticeships.
“The MBA is seen as a considerable matter on a CV so there will constantly be an incentive to provide a route to receiving this by way of the apprenticeship,” John Board, dean of Henley Small business University.
“The larger threat is that the authorities cuts the cost businesses have to pay out for the apprenticeship, which would no more time make it viable for universities like us to provide our class. You would then be remaining with companies who only pay out lip service to the benchmarks necessary for significant-quality management training.”
The notion of featuring an MBA separately to the apprenticeship also obtained the backing of the Chartered Administration Institute, the accreditation human body for management training in the British isles.
“It would set a unusual precedent if the authorities said that businesses are not able to pay out for their staff members to study for this qualification if that is what they want to do,” Daisy Hooper, the CMI’s head of plan and public affairs, said.
“The apprenticeship levy has broadened obtain to the MBA. Proscribing this will move it again to turning into an elitist qualification.”
The Office for Schooling said: “The training secretary questioned the Institute for Apprenticeships and Complex Schooling to evaluate the senior leader apprenticeships normal to ensure it is meeting its aims and supplies benefit for dollars. The evaluate is ongoing.”
