HONG KONG—A Chinese court imposed the dying penalty on a Canadian citizen charged with creating illicit prescription drugs, in a case that could even more pressure already frayed ties between Beijing and Ottawa.
Xu Weihong was sentenced Thursday by the municipal Intermediate People’s Court in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou, according to a court observe, which didn’t present specifics on the person’s qualifications or gender, aside from nationality. An alleged accomplice named Wen Guanxiong was sentenced to existence imprisonment, the observe claimed.
